Dangers lurking in other skin care productsSodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)These chemicals are found in most things we use such as soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and even car shampoo – it is the ingredient that makes things foam up. It is known as a surfactant and so you may know of it already as it’s used at garages to degrease engines, hardly the sort of thing that you want to put on your face! By stripping the oils from your skin it can cause irritation and also let in other environmental contaminants, giving easy access to the sensitive lower layers of your skin. This also allows the chemical to enter your body and once it is in there it can mimic the effects of the hormone Oestrogen (the chick hormone!!) it is theorised that these chemicals could be responsible for lowering male fertility rates! ouch SLES cannot be metabolised by the liver so causes longer term damage than SLS though both can leave residual levels in the heart, liver, lungs and brain. It has also been known to be contaminated with dioxane which is a known carcinogen. They’re both nasty and that’s why Facestuff won’t ever use this cheap alternative in any of our products, there are healthy alternatives out there and we prefer to use those for our top aussie blokes.
